What the Sapaw Rule Actually Does in Tongits
In standard Tongits, the player who calls a fight wins if no one can challenge. Tongits Sapaw adds one critical layer: when a player calls a fight, any opponent holding a hand that scores lower in deadwood count — or holds a valid set that covers the caller's declaration — can sapaw, meaning they place their cards on top to override the
win. The challenger with the lowest remaining deadwood takes the pot. This single rule shifts strategy completely. Holding back a strong meld until a fight is called becomes a deliberate move, not just patience. The burn card at the start of each round also affects which melds are reachable, so tracking discards matters as much as building your own hand.
